Security
"Passwords alone provide insufficient protection"

Every year brings thousands of new viruses and worms and a huge increase in the use of spyware. Industry analysts predict  that spammers will increasingly adopt tools used by  virus writers. Persistent virus attacks, stealthy spyware distribution, and the increasing volume of spam causes corporate problems in the form of lost productivity, diminished hardware and bandwidth availability, and increased liability.

What You May Be Facing

According to a survey conducted by the Yankee group, the following threats were most commonly experienced by respondents.

     -Viruses or Worms
     -Theft of customer data
     -Unauthorized data access
     -Disclosure of customer data
     -Misconfigurations
     -Web-site penetration
     -Denial-of-service attacks (DOS)

Information Week cites the Yankee Group survey, reports that more than half of the firms surveyed expected security budgets to increase over the next three years and that "patching" desktop computers on an ad-hoc basis will be costly at up $300.00 per desktop.

Information Technology analysts universally agree that a proactive approach identifying and addressing security vulnerabilities is essential to protect IT investments, mitigate risk, and protect business assets and resources.

Virus- a program or programming code that replicates by being copied to another program, computer boot sector or document. Some viruses react as soon as their code is executed; others lie in wait for a specific set of circumstances to occur before execution.

Worm- a self-replicating virus that does not alter files but resides in active memory and duplicates itself. Usually invisible, it is common for worms to be noticed only when their uncontrolled replication consumes system resources, slows or halts PC and network resources.

Zombie- term used to refer to a computer "taken over" by a hacker that carries out tasks for the hacker, such as sending out spam. The owner typically does not know their system is being used this way, but experiences negative side-effects
